1. Guided by one of Cape Town’s Brazilian Jiu Jitsu pioneers
Maximillian Jiu Jitsu is spearheaded by one of the earliest pioneers of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Cape Town, Head Coach Jason Gregoriades. Together with his brother Nicholas, he played a crucial role in helping to grow and establish the sport here in the early 2000s.
Jason earned his gradings up to brown belt under the legendary Roger Gracie, and later became one of the first South Africans ever to achieve a black belt. He has won numerous titles and competitions and brings with him years of international training experience.
Jason’s deep insight into competitive training is a real advantage for students. He knows how to translate his vast experience into the practical day-to-day reality of training classes.
Jason leads and develops the entire coaching team, ensuring consistent standards, technical precision, and a unified philosophy throughout Maximillian Jiu Jitsu. Head Coach Jason’s expert leadership is one of the most compelling reasons to choose this particular Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academy in Cape Town!
2. A Clear Grading Lineage You Can Trust
If you’re serious about Jiu Jitsu and want to move up the grading levels, you’ll no doubt be asking yourself questions like: Where does my coach get his grading from? Or: How do I know this grading system is authentic? (As you should!)
One of the clearest signs of a trustworthy Jiu Jitsu academy is its grading lineage. To help you understand our grading system here at Maximillian Jiu Jitsu, we need to go back to Head Coach Jason’s history a little.
Jason and his brother Nicholas trained directly under Roger Gracie, who dominated the sport during the early 2000s. Some might call him the Michael Schumacher of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The son of Coral Belt Mauricio Gomes and grandson of BJJ founder Carlos Gracie, Roger Gracie is considered one of the most accomplished Jiu Jitsu athletes and greatest competitors of the sport.
Head Coach Jason’s brother Nicholas became Roger’s first black belt, while Jason earned his black belt through the same direct lineage. It’s a clear and reliable grading system that is firmly rooted in one of the strongest lineages in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. (Here is the kids’ version.)
When you move through our grading system, you’ll not only be slotting into this same lineage, but you can also rest assured that every stripe and belt is awarded through a transparent, monitored process that reflects real skill and ability.
3. High-Calibre Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Cape Town
When it comes to the training culture, Jiu Jitsu academies tend to run the risk of tending towards one or the other extreme.
On the one hand, they may produce amazing athletes, but are unfortunately often also characterized by an unhealthy, pressured and toxic environment. On the other hand, there are also those academies where people are incredibly friendly and supportive, yet the quality of the Jiu Jitsu suffers and is often not up to standard.
Ideally, for any BJJ academy to thrive, finding the middle ground between these two extremes is key.
At Maximillian Jiu Jitsu, we believe we’ve found that middle ground, that sweet spot where both competitiveness and support balance each other out perfectly.
The quality of our grappling is of a very high standard, and students have the opportunity to reach a level of proficiency that’s on par with international competition standards. And though the environment is friendly and supportive, the quality of our Jiu Jitsu remains excellent.
Bottom line, don’t let our welcoming environment fool you into thinking that the quality of our training isn’t up to scratch! 😉
4. Safe, healthy preparation for Jiu Jitsu competitions
Similarly, there tend to be two extremes when it comes to competitions.
Some students choose not to compete at all and completely separate themselves from the idea of competing. On the other hand, there are those who make everything about competitions and put unnecessary pressure on themselves to win.
Maximillian Jiu Jitsu strives to provide its students with a balanced mixture of encouragement, preparation and support, without putting them under unnecessary pressure. Not keen on participating? Don’t worry, we won’t make you! However, we will let you know what your options are if you are interested in competing and work with you to achieve your goals.
As an academy, we participate in a set number of competitions each year and make sure our students are well-prepared for these. So if you’re a student who’d like to participate in competitions, rest assured that you’ll be in good hands!
5. A Positive and Supportive Training Culture
This brings us to the last and most important point. The training culture. What’s the atmosphere like? How do you feel while you’re training with us?
Unfortunately, combative sport often falls into the trap of becoming too aggressive or ego-driven. Pressure and unhealthy competition are, unfortunately, often part of the experience.
At Maximillian, the culture is intentionally different. When students walk through our doors, they are made to feel welcome. We meet you exactly where you are.
Throughout your journey as a student here, you can expect to feel supported and encouraged, regardless of where you start. There’s no toxicity or unhealthy competition — just genuine camaraderie and strong relationships.
Along with supportive and competent coaches, our students drive each other forward, celebrate growth, and push one another in ways that build confidence rather than fear. It’s a training environment where people thrive because the culture supports and uplifts them, rather than exerting unhealthy pressure.
Whether you’re new to the art of Jiu Jitsu or refining your skills, we’re confident you’ll feel right at home here. This ‘BJJ near me’ ticks all the right boxes – expert leadership, a clear grading system, high-calibre Jiu Jitsu grappling, safe, healthy preparation for competitions, and – most importantly – a positive, supportive training culture.
If you’ve been looking for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Cape Town that’s going to help you progress while being guided and supported by competent coaches and building quality relationships with other trainees, you’ve come to the right place!
